Good set-up as you'd expect from an event of this size although some algae issues had meant some last minute changes to transitions and swim course! No big deal though.
First experience of a dual transition - worked fine!
Swim start was the most aggressive I've ever experienced...plenty of elbows, kicks, swearing and clambering over people which lasted all the way to the first buoy so hard to find a rhythm and lost the front group. saw off the barrage of attacks for a 10.30 750m swim so happy enough. Solid transition and out onto 4 lap bike course around the lake, very flat and tailwind on the way back...full gas all the way, had an optimistic target of hitting close to 30 mins for the bike so when I came in on 29 dead you can safely say one was quite pleased.
Out onto the run, flat again, had a few cramp issues which i managed to run off, passed 2 guys early on with another well into the distance. Stuck at it, hit the turn with a mile or so to go and pushed on...amazingly I reeled him in and only with 200m to go did I realise it was for 3rd overall in the wave - buzzing! Run split of 16.40 for 5k.
Finish time of 57.40 for 3rd in the wave and 2nd in age group (4th overall across all waves) - qualified for European Champs next year! :-D
